It's an opportunity to learn about the regional history
Roaring camp is in Felton, CA close to Santa Cruz, atop a hill covered with Redwoods. These majestic Redwoods are 700 to 1000 years old and they soar over 270 feet (82 meters) above the forest ground. Isn't that impressive enough to go visit this beautiful site. It has a historic steam train, from the late 1800s with open air train-cars. It's one of the best preserved narrow-gauge steam engines in the country. These trains were once used to transport lumber out of the now protected redwood forests. The full round-trip ride takes about 1 hour through the Santa Cruz mountains from Felton’s Roaring Camp. It's an opportunity to learn about the regional history as the ride comes with a knowledgeable train conductor. He talks about the history of the forest, the area's diverse ecosystem, the railroad and the logging camp it served.
The loading point is in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, and the entrance has an old-fashioned California village with old fashioned general store, sheriff’s office, black smith and yarn spinner. You can buy souvenirs to take home from the blacksmith and the yarn station.
Our Bubu just loved the ride as he could see 360. They also had some neat tricks like at one point reversed and turned back on the same track, the 2 trains crossed paths, a cloud of steam blowing at the end of the ride. So it had these very entertaining breaks for lil ones to see and experience as 1 hour can be a long ride for some kids.
