Our experience with an interactive installation! Is it worth it with an infant?
Due to the nature of art installations/museums its great place for infants and toddlers.
I see a new trend of touring art installations, example The Color Factory, Museum of Ice Cream, LMNL, Candytopia. They are beautiful and awe-inspiring if you look from the standpoint of art. Also they make fun, interesting, artful photos and selfies for the narcissist in each of us :)
We chose to go for LMNL. This was going to be our first ever experience with a touring art installation and we were very excited. I showed Devavrat a few pics, preparing him for the day we go. Due to the nature of art installations/museums its great place for infants and toddlers. They can feel free to go touch anything, run and walk up on mostly everything and just be themselves. As opposed to the traditional museums where you have to be composed and not making any sound. From the get go, Bubu was up and about trying to figure out his own space, touching screens and happy to see so much color and movement.
Our favorite was the waterfall. Older kids tried hard to water the plants so they grow into strong jungle. It was fun to see them practice some real life skills like brainstorming, team building and strategy. The only downside was the success-meter took realllllly long to show results which can be disappointing in a museum environment where each group has limited time to look at things as you need to consider time and sharing with others in the building. Our close second was the one at the entrance with huge wood chandeliers. It was a lovely installation emphasizing the play of shadow, light and movement.
Overall I think it was a underwhelming experience. The interactions are not precise and need a lot of heavy hand gestures to make interactions making you wonder if its a fluke timing or really reacting to your gestures. It made me feel the urge to book our next visit either to Ice Cream or the Candy one. Which one do you recommend.
