Now I know there are quite a few places (check link) that help you to enjoy 4th of July with parades and fireworks in the Bay Area. We have tried most of them but I can single out my favorite for sure. The way I really love to celebrate the 4th holiday is by enjoying the fireworks show, offered at the Discovery Museum in San Jose, CA.
Cost
This is the best part, its FREE! It's a 30 min show completely sponsored by the Rotary Club. So glad to have this privilege close to our home.
Parking
They have tons of free parking off the close by roads/under bridges, you will definitely find a spot but not necessarily convenient as you have to walk 10 to 20 mins to get to the venue.
Weather
The chance of clear sky is almost 99% guaranteed.
Time
This firework show lasts for a good 30 minutes. The show starts after the last plane lands in San Jose airport. That's mostly around 9:00 - 9:30 pm but this year it was as late as 10:00 pm. So sometimes it runs way past your kids bedtime routine maybe even your's :) but who does not like an adventure especially if it has fireworks involved.
Finding your spot
I would recommend its best if you come in early, at around 6:00 pm-ish to find a good spot, they are not over crowded at that time. Overall try to come in before 7:30 pm to find a spot you like. And no matter where you decide to sit, there is never a bad seat, it always feels like it's a show made and performed just for you.
There is music band/s playing as you wait for the show to start. They have mostly been good+catchy.
Things to pack
For starts definitely do not forget to get a beach or outdoor rug/blanket/mat so you can lie down (better option) or sit down and watch the show.
The other thing to not forget is warm jackets, hats etc. I know it's summer and why will you need jackets but its outdoors in an open space it gets very, very chilly and also gets a little dew-y. So all-weather/waterproof jackets will serve better.
We like to get our dinner to the venue and have a relaxed picnic dinner as we wait for the show.
Another thing to keep your lil one occupied is getting ball/frisbee/outdoor games to play. If you forget to pack games just trot ahead near the music band and have a dance party.
I would love to know how you like to celebrate your 4th of July or Independence Day of your country.
